Our Afzelia Pods (Afzelia xylocarp) are imported from Cambodia and make an excellent addition to any blackwater aquarium scape. Once submerged, the pods slowly open over time, creating natural shelters and resting points for shrimp, crayfish, small fish, and freshwater gobies, which we find particularly enjoy perching on them.

With a low tannin release, Afzelia Pods are ideal for aquascapers who want to add natural structure and botanical interest without heavily darkening the water. They work beautifully in blackwater, biotope, and shrimp-focused aquariums, encouraging natural behaviour and biofilm development.

I've had these in my blackwater tank for about three weeks and the pods are slowly opening just like the listing said, which my shy cory cats have claimed as little caves. Eight pods was plenty for my 20 gallon and they've barely broken down at all.

Tossed a couple into my betta’s tank and within a week they’d started splitting open just like the description says. The fish keeps darting in and out of the gap for cover, and the water’s got that nice tea tint I was after. Glad I grabbed the 8-pack since they’re clearly gonna be a staple in this s

Dropped these into my blackwater tank this morning and the tannins tinted the water a gorgeous amber within a few hours. The pods are already starting to split open, which my rasboras have been curiously darting in and out of for natural hideouts.
